Many of us are finding more and more that there are toxins in almost everything surrounding us. One thing we don’t always think about as potentially having toxins in it is toothpaste. I like the idea of knowing exactly what I’m putting into and onto my body. At least those are things I have more control over as compared to what I may be breathing in in the normal air outside. All too often people think that is they sell it in stores, then it must be okay for you. That’s sadly not the case in our country and nowadays it seems like there toxins in your household cleaners, detergents, food and even in our toothpaste.
Recently I came across the idea of making my own toothpaste. I had seen versions using ingredients like baking soda and coconut oil. As great as those may be, I found that using a different mix of ingredients could not only keep my mouth just as clean, but could provide detoxifying benefits at the same time. Get the recipe after the jump!!
To make this simple toothpaste you need only the following 3 ingredients:
- Spring Water
- Peppermint Essential Oil
- Zeolite Powder–Get it HERE.
*You’ll want one that is very fine-along the lines of flour.
You’ll also need a container for storing your toothpaste. I used a small jam jar. I thought the wider neck would make it easier to use. 😉
Add 2 Tablespoons of Zeolite powder
Add just enough spring water to get your desired consistency.
Mix and add in 15-20 drops of peppermint essential oil.
(Other essential oils that are helpful for oral care are rosemary, clove, cinnamon, tea tree and thyme.)
Store with a tight lid so that it retains it moisture and consistency.
Now is anyone here wondering why the heck I’d use something called Zeolite? The short answer is that Zeolite is a natural detoxifying agent and is the negatively charged product of lava and water. It bonds with positively charged ions (such as heavy metals and radio isotopes) and in exchange releases elements such as potassium or calcium. The cage-like structure of zeolite acts as a trap for these toxins and transports them out of your body.
Because there are such amazing benefits of zeolite you can actually swallow this toothpaste. This allows for you to get a small amount of zeolites into your body throughout the day and if you’re brushing with with it regularly you’re constantly detoxifying your body.
What else does it do?
It can remove pesticides and herbicides in your body from consuming foods that have been exposed to them.
It reduces the toxins that get filtered through your liver by trapping them in the intestines, rerouting them. and disposing of them through your bowels.
Helps your body achieve a healthy alkalinity and a balanced pH.
If you’re brushing your teeth anyway, why not get a few additional healthy benefits from a natural source provided by the Earth itself?

Ohhhh, this sounds awesome! How does it taste?
Kassie Groll says
It has a minty taste but it’s a duller one. Not a hit you over the head mint like commercial brands.

Interesting! Did you like it immediately or has it taken a little time to get used to?
Kassie Groll says
It only took me a couple uses to get used to it and that was just a matter of determining the right amount to use. Hubby immediately liked it. =)

I like Toms Toothpaste and I believe it is safe. However I could always use detox help. I had no idea about zeolite! Thank you for sharing. If ever you want to do a guest post, please let me know! littlecrunchy.com

(hubby’s account) I had never heard of zeolite or detoxing with a toothpaste! This is brilliant! I’d probably alternate between this and our usual homemade stuff!
Kassie Groll says
I think supplementing would be a great way to integrate it into your routine!
Jenni says
Thanks for the information. I had not heard of zeolite before.

This is pretty cool! I’ve heard of Zeolite before but didn’t really know what it was or what to use it for.. I have a stash of clay toothpaste to use up but will definitely try this in the future! Sharing on the GMN page today too!
