I recently got the opportunity to host a party through UNREAL. I have to say, as soon as I received the “goodie” package I was pretty impressed. I’m totally on board with the vision that this company has to “unjunk” the world and they are starting with their candy line.

As you guys know, my family does what it can to avoid processed foods, GMOs, corn syrup and the like. But, you also know I’m 15 weeks pregnant at this point and a female so chocolate is always a hit with me. ūüėČ Instead of using all that extra junk (which is really only a way for other brands to save money during manufacturing) UNREAL uses double the cacao, more peanuts, real milk, cane sugar, and organic palm fruit oil Because of these changes, you can expect their candy to have 30% less sugar, 60% more fiber and 250% more protein than competing brands.

Inside my package of goodies were 5 boxes of candy.

Peanut Butter Cups (UNREAL 77): These are probably both my favorite as well as my hubby’s. I have to admit, I’m a bit of a peanut butter cup snob. They’re one of my favorite candies and I find it hard to compare a lot of the brands to the Reese’s name brand that we’ve all grown up with. Usually they just taste..off. This, however tasted so decadent and delicious! I honestly think it would make me sick to eat a Reese’s after having the UNREAL version. In a direct comparison there is 48% less sugar, 200% more dietary fiber, 8% less fat, and 10% less calories than the leading name brand. (& doesn’t taste fake.)

Chocolate Caramel Nougat Bar (UNREAL 5): I would say these are comparable to a Twix type of candy bar, although those don’t tend to be my candy of choice, so I may be off on that assumption.¬†Compared¬†to the leading name brand there is 46% less sugar, 400% more fiber, 100% more protein, 37% less fat, and 37 % less calories. Without sacrificing flavor!

Chocolate Peanut Caramel Nougat Bar (UNREAL 8): Imagine if you could have a Snickers and not have to feel guilty about it..Enter UNREAL 8. All the same¬†overindulgence (okay, it’s totally better than the competitor) with 43% less sugar, 400% more fiber, 25% more protein, 14% less fat and 29% less calories.¬†¬†

Candy Coated Chocolates (UNREAL 41): Super yummy little pop of chocolatey flavor! The flavor is actually rich enough that my hubby ate a half a bag before passing it off to me. We’re not huge candy eaters here and probably haven’t eaten candy more than a small handful of times in the past year or so. I think I could hop right back on the candy bandwagon if I stocked up with these though. There’s 39% less sugar, 200% more fiber, 100% more protein, and 21% less calories than the leading brand.

Candy Coated Chocolates with Peanuts (UNREAL 54): These are just as tasty as the others and once again don’t disappoint! Comparing to the leading name brand there is 36% less sugar, 50% more fiber, 20% more protein, 15% less fat, and 20% less calories!!

I think what I might like the most about this family run company is that it all began with a 13 year old’s curiosity. After a night of trick or treating, this boy had found that his dad had¬†confiscated¬†most of the candy for being junk. It led to an argument (what kid wouldn’t be upset to miss out on most of their loot?) and after doing some research he learned that his dad was actually right. He knew candy wasn’t the best thing for you but he didn’t realize until then just how bad it really was.

With the help of his older brother and father they searched out scientists and chefs until the were eventually referred to a top chef in Spain. He was so moved by the mission that he helped to assemble a whole team of scientists to develop the ‘unjunked’ candy. Together they immediately did away with corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oils, GMOs,¬†artificial¬†flavors, colors, and preservatives. They also reduced the sugar content by an average of 40% per serving. As a company, they were also concerned with making sure their milk came from pastured cows using no hormones and that their other ingredients were properly sourced from smaller farms. They even came up with a way to manufacture to keep the retail cost of the candy down. I know from experience that other things that are labeled good or better for you generally come with a heftier price tag. UNREAL’s mission is to offer better for you at the same cost and available at the same stores you’re already shopping.

  1. I really loved this review! I love the idea of unjunking candy. I would love to see them get rid of the cane sugar though and move toward stevia. Their candy sounds delicious!
